Isn't insurance jargon fun? Sorry I asked!
A bumbershoot is what they call an umbrella in London, where most of insurance got started and umbrella policies definately got started! So that is what they still call an umbrella policy in London....
Umbrella policies are still somewhat hard for most insureds to understand for a variety of reasons:
1. Starting with the name....but that's the easy part...umbrella...it goes over your other liability policies. But wait.
it may or may not go over ALL your other liability policies.
Because here is the BIG caveat with Umbrella Policies. Each is different. There are no Standard Forms. All the exclusions are different. So you and your agent MUST be sure that your policy covers what you need to have covered for YOUR business.
2. The vast majority of insureds have never had an umbrella claim....or even known anyone who has, so they go merrily along buying the cheapest policy available, not checking to be sure the coverage is applicable to their needs each year. If their business changes, they may or may not have the right coverage. If they change from one umbrella carrier (company) to another, again, they may not have the right coverage. In Umbrella insurance, as in no other insurance, the form is the MOST important thing and the exclusions RULE!!!!
3.The MOST different of all umbrella polices are those dealing with Foreing Liability. If a company has a number of operations in a number of foreign companies, there are only a few Umbrella carriers who can adequately cover this risk without huge gaps in coverage. Here is where you need a true Umbrella Specialist to guide you. Someone who has had a minimum of 75 hours of specialized training over and above the minimum of regular underwriting training. Someone like ME.
Insurance is a minefield of jargon....but I actually think it is kind of challenging to navigate it!!!!

The next time you are annoyed by someone trying to sell you insurance, consider this:
The recent earth quake in China, caused approx. $20 BILLION in damage. Guess how much of that was covered by insurance? Less than 5%. Somebody is not selling. Somebody is not buying. Less than 4% of Chinese have life insurance compared to 77% of Americans. A similar amount is true of porperty insurance. So when it comes to rebuilding in times of natural disasters, there is precious little insurance money to count on for the rebuilding.
In India, the death benefit for Workers Compensation is $250 per life.
Yes, that is one of the reasons it is cheaper for American businesses to do business there.
But next time you are complaining that someone is bugging you to be properly insured, whether it's to get your business insured to value, or to make a Crisis Management plan for your business, or your family adequately taken care of in case something happens to you.....think about China. What would you do if your business were wiped out and you only received 5% of its value?
Just a thought from today's headlines....my sister is in China...

I am moving the this week!!
Yes, Jennifer, I am discarding all clothing that does not fit, that does go not with anything else and that I have not worn in the past year!. Also finding homes for old books, broken items and duplicate items that both my new boyfriend and I own....
I have also determined NOT to move anything dusty, dirty, etc. Finally filed everything, sorted those old pictures, etc.
Boy, is this cleansing!!
I am now down to about one half of what I originally had to move...which will save on my moving cost. And I finally have a VERY organized feeling to my life!!
My suggestion? As you enter this lovely spring season....pretend you are moving!!! The feeling is energising!!!

It started small.....one little carpal claim here, and then another there. I didn't even really believe that people could hurt that much from them! But one day I looked around me and nearly everyone who was working on computers was going in for carpal tunnel surgery! And as I read more and more loss runs (which I do daily), I saw that nearly every industry, Manufacturing, Construction, Technology, was having both frequency and severity issues with Workers Compensation Claims involving some kind of Repetitive Motion Claims. And they were increasing at an alarming rate! Even the sports world was experiencing this same problem. Claims and Loss Control has worked diligently to address the issue, with a wide array of Ergonomics programs, excercise programs, etc., but as with a lot of soft tissue injuries they have had minimal success.
For me, I sort of floated above the problem, until BANG!!! One morning I woke up and literally could not move!!!
My whole side was nearly paralyzed!!! Guess what folks?? Years of working on the computer had done me in!!! I was now a casualty of Repetitive Motion and the pain is NO JOKE!!
So I began my own program of WHAT WORKS. And it was a long journey....more than a year. But I am now PAIN FREE. And my first thing to tell you is that a lot of what is out there is just good preventative advice, but it's not going to help you once you are in serious pain. And also I am not a big fan of drugs. What am I fan of? Gentle excercise that gets the body back in alignement and lasar light treatment. The best part of this plan is that is painless and in expensive...but it needs to be done daily. But it WILL bring permanent relieve with no side effects.Even to the most serious cases. I call it a WELLNESS PROGRAM. When I see a company that has a loss run dotted with such claims, I suggest that dedicate the first hour of every (on company time) to this WELLNESS PROGRAM. Every one who has a RM claim MUST go through these excercises and have a lasar light treatment (all painless)....and then suggest they do it at home again before they go to bed. When they began to see the positive benefits, they WILL do it at home. I suggest that they also allow ANY employee with any aches or pains to participate. But it is MANDATORY if they file a Work Comp claim for RM. This stops fraudulent claims, gets small claims under control immediately and starts healing the bad ones for far less money than expensive physical therapy programs that have not been effective in the past. And I offer to train them in the excercises and sell them the light machine.
This is what I consider doing something over and above "selling them a policy".

I'm not a huge football fan, but I've alway loved the Lombardi quote "The harder you work, the luckier you get!"
This last month I have labored diligently and some things did not go as planned. Today a million dollar account that I have done very little work on, waltzed in the door. I have seen this happen over and over in my business. Your break your heart and your back on this little corner of the field planting seeds, and then a tree pops up over there where you even forgot you had planted something.
To the rest of the world, it looks like luck. You know better. If you had planted NO seeds, nothing would have grown!
So revel in your so called luck...bask in it ..you probably worked very hard for it...just not exactly on that plot of ground.

You have done absolutely everything right.....and still this ONE client, who should have bought from you....did not do so. How long do you agonize about it? How much do you beat yourself up about it? How much blame do you take on yourself and how much do you dump on everyone else???
Here is what I do.
Honestly access, to the best of my ability, what I could have done better, and vow to do so next time.
Don't blame anyone else for anything, even if it is glaringly obvious what they did wrong. If they screwed up, they know it. But you will need them for the next deal. Also, whatever they DID do that was right, thank them, even if you did not get the deal. Especially if you did not get the deal.
And lastly, the best piece of advice I ever heard from a very experienced older sales man..."Don't get too high when it all goes well and don't get too low when it all goes bad, because this is sales after all, and if you take it TOO personally you will burn out too soon."
Now on to bigger and better things. After all its Friday!!!!

At this stage in my career, it should not be a big deal. It is. I have known him for 17 years and I took this specific job because of him. He is one of the most compassionate and ethical people in our industry. I wish him well. But I grieve for ME. And I feel bereft.
